William J. Burns

William John Burns (19 october 1861 - 14 april 1932) was an American private investigator and law enforcement official. He was known as "America's Sherlock Holmes" and earned fame for having conducted private investigations into a number of notable incidents. From 22 august 1921 to 10 may 1924, Burns served as the director of the Bureau of Investigation (BOI), predecessor to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

In may 1914, Arthur Conan Doyle was a guest of William J. Burns to visiti Coney Island (New York).

In april 1922, William J. Burns greeted Arthur Conan Doyle and his family when he arrived in America from England to deliver a series of lectures on spiritualism (see photos below).
